I have received the following email from the person responsible for the recruitment of Deloitte’s BrightStart scheme. If you are interested, please see Mrs Wilkes who will pass your name on.

The BrightStart scheme is for high calibre school leavers who may not be interested in going to University, but who would be a good fit for Deloitte.

I thought I’d let you know that we will be holding a few Insight Days throughout the next few months, which all students, who meet the entry requirements of the scheme (at least a C in GCSE English and B in GCSE Maths and predicted to obtain 300/320 UCAS points), are invited to come along. These Insight Days offer students the opportunity to gain some insight into the schemes – what the school leaver scheme is all about, what one may do on a day to day basis within the different service lines, what qualifications one may study towards within the specific service lines, and of course, hints and tips on how to excel in the recruitment process. Students will also be given the opportunity to meet people who already work within the service lines and who can therefore answer all the questions that they may have. This Insight Day is therefore inevitably highly beneficial for anyone who is interested in applying to the scheme.

Accountancy Opportunities

A local accountancy firm (Dickinsons) are keen to recruit A level leavers directly into their firm and are happy to come in and talk to students (individually if needed). If any current Y13 students are not planning to go to university (or have applied but are still wavering) and are interested in Accountancy, see Mrs Wilkes or Mrs Pickford. Equally, this offer is open to Y12s who would like to look into this ahead of time. Details of positions available and training etc. given follows in an extract from an email we received from them.

I am from local firm of accountants in Rickmansworth, and each year we look to recruit school leavers (A Level), to enrol onto our comprehensive training program, training them with a mixture of work experience, and a premium business college in London to provide them with skills to gain internationally recognised business qualifications in chartered accountancy.

These two qualification are primarily the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) and the ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales). I myself have studied both these qualifications and would be happy to talk further to any prospective applicants about them. I have attached a link below detailing the qualification:

The chartered accountancy (ACA) qualification is held by the majority of top business leaders, and in particular financial directors. It provides an opening to a range of career opportunities, broadening horizons, geographically, socially, financially and much more.

We look to provide an alternative to going to university, as through years of training we have come to realise the skills and experience needed for a career in accountancy is best learnt this way.

We are looking to recruit just three trainees for this opportunity, to start after they have received their A-Level results, (interviewing will commence beforehand), although no specific timeline has been agreed.

General

The Study	The Study will be closed for a meeting from 3.30-4.45pm tonight (Monday 20^th). If you were planning to stay at school to work, speak to Mrs Wilkes who will open a classroom for you and you can return to The Study at 4.45pm.
Connexions Healthy Living Drop in	This will take place during lunch time on Tuesday in the careers suite.
Re-sits	Forms are now available from Mrs Barter and Mrs Plested. The deadline for getting your form in is Tuesday 13^th March but ideally you should get your forms in well before this.
Parking	No student should be parking anywhere on the school site but particularly near the back gate. These spaces are used by canteen staff who come in slightly later and are finding they have nowhere to park.
Common Room Duty	13Gi are on duty this week.

UCAS Convention	Please look at the blog for a really good link to some preparation for the forthcoming UCAS convention.
Prefect Applications	These are due in by the end of today. Forms are available from Mrs Plested in the Sixth Form office.
Whipsnade Trip	Any student who has not yet paid for this trip should see Miss Gillan as soon as possible.
Citizenship	‘Home Truths’ preparation lesson in form rooms with tutors.

Y13

UCAS Extra	UCAS Extra is available from 24 Feb, and is for applicants who have used all five choices on their application but are holding no offers – they may have been unsuccessful or they may have declined their offers. It gives those applicants the chance to maintain their motivation by adding additional choices, one at a time, before Clearing. Extra is applicant driven and all choices are made through the online Track service. Courses that have places available may be selected from 24 February in Course Finder (as a search option) or in Course Search (where courses with Extra places available are marked with an ‘x’). Not all courses are available in Extra and applicants should research availability not only through the UCAS website but also directly with universities and colleges. If you need any help with this, please see Mrs Wilkes.
Tesco Opportunities	If you are not going to university next year, see the blog for some career opportunities from Tesco Head Office.
Letter home	Miss Gillan needs to see a number of students regarding a letter that was sent home before half term. Y12 Parents Information Evening

Advanced notice that there will be a Y12 Parents Information Evening held in the school Hall at 6pm on Thursday 28th June. I will be talking about the Higher Education process and we will have a speaker from the University of Hertfordshire who will discuss Student Finance. Please note the slightly earlier start time to the one previously published. The talk should last approximately an hour and there will be an opportunity to ask questions afterwards.

World University undergraduate fair

The QS World University Tour undergraduate fair takes place in London on Sunday 11th March 2012. The fair will be held at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre SW1P 3EE (nearest tube station is Westminster or St James Park) and runs from 1pm until 5pm.
There will be over 30 of the world’s top universities, from both the UK and abroad exhibiting at the fair looking to talk with students interested in higher education. We will also run a seminar programme on the day on topics such as applying to a top UK institution, studying abroad and funding/scholarships advice. Full details of this year’s exhibitors and seminar programme will be published in due course.

The fair is free to attend but students must register their details at: www.topuniversities.com/londonfair
Parents and guardians are more than welcome to visit with their children, there is no need for them to register their details.

In addition, we have also set up a facebook event page about the fair which we encourage students to visit which offers the latest information about the fair.

Art & Design Competition – Sixth Form students are invited to enter a Summer Design competition with the winner receiving 2 weeks tuition fees a prize worth 1,480. For a chance to win, students must submit a creative project using any design tool e.g. sketches, illustrations, computer graphics, collages, photographs on the topic of London 2012 Design a product, garment or space that is unique for the Olympic Games. Projects must be submitted by email to laureate-uk@triagonal.net by March 30th.

Open Days – Sixth Form students and their parents are invited to attend the Spring Open Days at Les Roches International School of Hotel Management and Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland. These are on Friday 16th March, and Friday 20th April at Les Roches, and Saturday 17th March and Saturday 21st April at Glion. As I am sure you are aware, students graduating from both of these universities continue to receive on average 2 – 3 job offers on graduation day which I cannot imagine many other universities can claim in this current economic climate.

Tesco Opportunity

Tesco have created a Commercial Trainee Programme to ensure that as a business they don’t miss out on high calibre talent who have chosen not to go to university and are looking for an alternative route in which to develop their career. The essence of the programme is for those who are choosing not to go to university but have the capability, academic results and drive to carve out a successful career.

They are currently still taking applications for the programme but the application deadline is the 31st March 2012.

The opportunities exist within the Commercial function, and successful applicants will be placed in either a Trainee Buyer or a Trainee Merchandiser role. The Buyers are responsible for developing products to meet customer expectation in terms of fashion and consumer trends, product specification and price, and our Merchandisers support this process by ensuring we use the right suppliers to ensure the best product at the right price and that the product is manufactured and delivered to meet consumer demand. These products include Food, Clothing (including Footwear and Accessories) and General Merchandise (including Electrical, Home, Sports Equipment, DIY, Music, Toys, Stationary).

The requirement for the programme is 240 UCAS points and grade C in Maths and English GCSE.

They are looking for applicants who are open to either Buying or Merchandising roles in any product area but are equally interested in individuals who have a proven passion for a product area. For example, someone may be interested in sport and may wish to develop a career as a sports equipment buyer, or likewise a passion for food.

Which role an applicant will be suitable for in terms of buying or merchandising will assessed during the recruitment process, taking into account their individual experience, skill set, academic leanings and personal preference.

The process of recruitment is:

Telephone Interview
Online testing-Numerical and verbal reasoning.
Assessment Centre

Location: The roles exist at either our Welwyn Garden City office (General Merchandise and Clothing) or Cheshunt (food opportunities).

If any of your students receive an email like this, please make sure they:

1. report it to complaints@ucas.ac.uk
2. delete it once they have reported it.

Advise them not to click on any of the links in the email or provide any personal details.

Remember, UCAS will never email your students for their personal details.
